An Extraordinary Ability to Manage Colour

Breathing Art 00 CoverThree of my paintings are published in this new Italian Art Magazine.

“The paintings of Gültekin Bilge are almost obsessive… This makes the characteristic of his work. The Artist draws inspiration from the world in which he lives, contemplating and meditating on the essence of life in order to bring support, through an extraordinary ability to manage colour, to his intimate perceptions, thoughts, his states of soul. Gültekin Bilge is fully aware of the contradiction between good and bad and loves to paint figurative subjects using symbolic abstractions which reveal his personal stamp.”

2012-G001 This Is Our Life Reduced

This Is Our Life (2012)

This painting combines the dissolve and whirling techniques to depict the anxieties that many people feel about world events. The image shows people watching silently and worrying as events unfold. It was triggered by the idea that the media and politicians talk endlessly about major problems in society and world events. Ordinary people watch passively as crime, conflict, social injustice, wars and natural disasters unfold on their television screens. Even though the actual events are often far distant, watching at home feels very close up and personal. This can create psychological concerns that people find difficult to express.  I wanted to convey the sense of powerlessness that people experience because they feel they can’t do anything to stop or change what is happening.

Blonde With Blue Eyes (2013)

The large face in the centre represents a complex female character. When I met her I immediately felt a very powerful energy hidden behind her everyday appearance.  I made many small hidden portraits expressing a range of conflicting emotions concealed within this woman.

Shiny Thoughts

Shiny Thoughts (2009)

I created this image to highlight how some people seem to be different from normal because they have very innovative “shiny” thoughts, represented by the yellow paint. The large profiles are meant to symbolise how these special people are giants because they leave their mark on the world and positively influence the lives of many people both in the present time and in future generations.

About Gültekin

Gültekin Bilge is a Turkish Cypriot Artist, born 1945. He received his MA in1972, graduating from the Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts. Bilge was unable to paint for many years after losing the use of his right hand when he was shot in the 1974 Cyprus War. During recovery he worked as an art teacher whilst following developments in contemporary art and searching for ways to create his own unique style that could be recognised as having roots in the Turkish tradition. For many years Bilge was dissatisfied with his works and destroyed them. Since returning to painting full time in 2005 he has won numerous awards and has exhibited widely in Europe, USA, Australia and Japan. His works are held in private collections in UK, Cyprus, Turkey, Germany, USA and Japan.
