Little Treasures Exhibition Bologna 2013
When Paola Trevisan of Trevisan International Art invited me to exhibit in this exhibition, I felt it would be an unusual challenge. I painted this piece specially for Bologna. All exhibits in Little Treasures must be four small paintings paintings measuring 20cm x 20cm. My artworks are usually much larger, but I thought it would be interesting to create a smaller piece.
My artwork is one single composition called THIS UNHAPPY LIFE. It is composed of four small paintings on wood. Three are square and the fourth is a carved piece with a composite portrait of three unhappy faces. Two of these faces are in profile and the third is facing forward down at mouth. The carved piece represents “This Unhappy World” created by the way many individual people, communities and nations behave towards one another.
The square with the yellow background is called SHOUTING EACH OTHER.
The square with the blue background is called EATING EACH OTHER. The angry faces with big teeth represent people “eating” one another’s ideas and breaking one another down rather than respecting different views and trying to celebrate and build on diversity.
The square with the red background is called KILLING EACH OTHER. It depicts opposing unhappy faces and two death masks at the bottom. These images represent people killing one another because they have different viewpoints and ideologies. People die on both sides and everybody is unhappy because everybody loses. My thoughts are that

I did not go to Bologna in person as I was very busy. I had many works to do. It is a pity because I would very much like to visit. When the painting came back from Bologna it went to a gallery in Tokyo.
